Bioshock Infinite review

An epic game that has been in development for several years now and was first revealed August 12, 2010 and given an early gameplay demo the following month. However, Bioshock Infinite would not see release until March 26, 2013. Infinite had a E3 2011 appearence and showed a more detailed and updated gameplay demo. It was delayed to March 26 from October 16 and February 26 respectively.

What is Bioshock Infinite you might ask?

Bioshock Infinite is like partly a spin-off from the previous Bioshock's that used the underwater city of Rapture in the 1960's. Infinite takes place on the floating city of Columbia in 1912. Thanks to Rosalind and Robert Lutece's theory on "quantum physics", this floating city is able to be suspended indefinitely, keeping it floating safely. Columbia was launched in 1893 by the U.S. government due to the efforts of Prophet Zachary Comstock. Columbia fired on Chinese civilians during the Boxer Rebellion in 1901 and eventually seceded from the U.S. on July 6, 1902. Comstock is considered the prophet of Columbia and the leader of the ultra-nationalist and ultra-conservative Founders who worship America's founding fathers George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson like legends. Booker Dewitt is a former Pinkerton Agent born on April 19, 1874 who is hired by Lutece to retrieve Elizabeth, seed of the prophet in exchange for removal of debts. DeWitt is sooner found to be the False Shepard since his right hand has "AD" initials branded. Columbia is also being terrorized by the Vox Populi led by Daisy Fitzroy whose goal is to gain equality of races and economic classes for all. Vox can be best characterized as Anarcho-Communist. Columbia is based on American Exceptionalism and culture as you see Turn of the 20th century architecture and American style flags for Columbia. What made Bioshock Infinite great was it's themes of America and the turn of the 20th century which I was really excited about, especially with state of the art PC graphics as well as the new inventions making 1912 look more ahead of what it really was. The Lutece twins are like spirits in human form teleporting anywhere in existence due to their theory on alternate realities and quantum physics, making them god and goddess of this matter. Voxophones are also interesting as they are audio recordings and sound like the most advanced for their time in 1912, with some dating back to as early as 1890. Bioshock Infinite at times will give you a feel for thinking of the Industrial Revolution. What would have been sweet was adding automobiles that ran on Shock Jocky(ALTERNATIVE SOURCE of power). Robotic horses substitute this as horse drawn carriages are still used.

Gameplay follows a new direction while keeping hold on some of Bioshock's gameplay such as instead of Plasmids you now have Vigors which feel and look different but are similar to Plasmids. Plus, you also have gear which give upgrades when selected. You can only have one at a time per slot(head, torso, legs, and arms) and gear will be chosen for you at random when you find the gear present. Numerous weapons can be found but each side(Founder vs. Vox Populi) such as pistols, machine guns, sniper rifles, RPGs, Shotguns, Crank Gun, and now Sky Hook. The Sky Hook is used to travel on the Skylines which are like rails but more rollercoaster like rail system for transportation. Elizabeth can open tears which are shortcut windows to other Worlds and places. She can also fetch you money, salts, ammo, health. Vigors require salts but each vigor consumes differently. You also have infusions to increase your shield, health, and salts capacity. Unlike Bioshock, you can't carry extra health packs with you and you can only carry two weapons at a time. Four difficulties but 1999 mode is the hardcore mode that makes much of your game time a feel of a life or death situation as if you don't have enough money for rejuvination, you will be reset at the previous save point. You can also collect Voxophones which are like audio diaries but with record discs of the early 20th century. Following vending machines are Dollar Bill where you can purchase small items like health, salts, ammo, and even in some cases lockpicks, Vidi Vigor where you can purchase upgrades for vigors, and Minutemen Armory where you can upgrade weapons. Note the PS3 version is compatable with Playstation Move which enhances an already awesome game like this.

Graphics are the most advanced on the PC with some compromises on Xbox 360 version and possibly PS3. If you have an advanced gaming PC like I do then graphics are the best of the best and look so detailed and advanced as if Bioshock Infinite is truly an 8th generation game. Characters and environments look like they have the most detail of any game I've played so far despite having large eyes. Columbia is an awesome created environment made to resemble early 1900's America but more racist and conservative against colored and Irish people. Themes for this game are done perfectly and soundtracks sound like music from the 1900's to 1930's despite having lyrics from far into future as the 1980's. Have you seen a more detail game than Bioshock Infinite in Spring of 2013?

Story: 94, Gameplay: 98(PS3), 95(PC, Xbox 360), Graphics: 100(PC), 95(PS3), 92(Xbox 360), Lasting Appeal: 99. Overall rating for this game is 97/100 for PC, 96.5/100 for PS3, and 95/100 for Xbox 360. a Mac OS version will be released Summer 2013.
